The Drive to Discover by James Cameron (Wired). Doesn't start out about space, but Cameron gives some very good reasons why we need to explore real space again.
"We've spent 32 years "exploring space" in low Earth orbit. Exploring nothing. To stay in orbit you have to go 17,000 mph, or Mach 25. So we've spent three decades going nowhere fast."

Deadwood returns in March 2005. Season 1 DVD release date February 8th, 2005.

NASA Failures of the Future?

Last night in a dream, through the clouds and fog, I saw 3 commercial jets on fire over Long Island. The largest had a gaping hole in its starboard side, with flames licking its fuselage. The 4th plane was a turboprop, in a power dive that was going to hit right in front of me.
I awoke, feeling very disturbed.

Mach 10
NASA plans for the X-43 to attain an all new speed record for winged aircraft next week, hopefully on the 15th.
Wired: NASA to Attempt Mach 10 Flight.
NASA: X-43A website.
SpaceDaily: Hypersonic Flight Set For Next Week.
The previous speed record for winged craft was accomplished by the X-43 in March of this year, when it hit Mach 7.

Mix it up
The Remix Era, Before mash-ups, there was Depeche Mode.
The new Depeche Remix album is pretty good. My only problem with it is the fact that since I buy most of DM's singles, I had some of the songs that are on this collection. But only a few.
36 Tracks, 3 CDs, a mix of old and new remixes. Tracks mixed by Flood, DJ Shadow, Kevorkian, Air, Renagade Soundwave, Adrian Sherwood, Alan Moulder, and more.
I highly recommend that you buy this. Or buy the single CD.
I am a DM whore when it comes to their remixes.

Firefox 1.0 goes live at 1 am.
I have been using Firefox exclusively on all Windows boxes, and about 60% of the time on my Mac (Safari the other 40%), for the longest time now (since it was named Phoenix). If you haven't switched from Internet Explorer I highly recommend that you try it now. It easily surpasses IE in every way, and is a hell of a lot more secure.
Case in point, New MyDoom draws on IE flaw to spread.
For those of you weary of switching, there is this neat Switch site, that will answer all your questions.

The Tree
For my first Christmas, and my family's first in our new home, my father bought a live tree. We planted it in the front yard, where it has grown, these last 30 years, into a huge fucking tree (its on the left in this picture, it is so big I couldn't get it all in the pic).
I have always joked that I will live for as long as that tree.
My mother just told me that she will be cutting it down sometime next week.
I need to write a will.

Purple Majesty
Instead of red/blue for counties that went Bush/Kerry, this map shows the counties as a mix. The more red a county, the more it voted Bush. The more blue a county, the more it voted Kerry.
Most of the counties are a shade of Purple, showing us how mixed we are.
