    remote self control
I went to a Best Buy today, looking to buy some nose hair clippers, an object that I have been telling myself I have needed since Christmastime. Every time I went to purchase the said implement I either could not find it or felt a deep sense of shame in having to buy such a device. I don't know why, but I did. Maybe its is because I have nose hairs that need trimming on a regular basis, maybe because I am at an age where hairs start the gradual creep to places where hair was not present before. Who knows. I just felt the shame and would then leave the store without buying anything.

Today I walked into my local Best Buy and saw a stand of DVDs in the drive aisle. The drive aisle contains those items which are either "HOT" or those which draw eyes like water draws a dowsing rod. Today it was
The Matrix: Revolutions. I picked it up. Next I saw a $300 flat screen Sony CRT TV on sale. I marveled at the prices and the clarity and how stupid it would be if I bought one. Then I saw a box set of the second Dune series from the SciFi channel and picked that up and then I came across Kill Bill Vol 1 and picked that up. Only then did I even start looking for the nose hair clipper.

This is why I hate shopping. I go for one thing and find hundreds of items I would like to buy. I didn't even go near the games or computer sections. God help me if I did that, I'd have a new computer, or printer with no place to put it.

After picking up the last nose/ear hair trimmer, and realizing that there was no way in hell I was going to spend this much money when all I wanted was the nose hair clipper, which meant I was coming to my senses, I turned around and saw the CD box set collections.

I SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED ANYWHERE NEAR A CD BOXSET DISPLAY.

There were the next 2 installments in the Depeche Mode singles collections, a Cheap Springsteen box set, a rather cool looking Talking Heads box set, and a The Cure box set that I knew was out and had been avoiding because I knew if I saw it in a store I would buy it no matter how poor I was.

And I am, at the moment rather poor. Poor in the sense that if I were to lose my job this week, I would need to find a job within 20 days or crawl back to my mom. Which isn't horrible, it could be worse, I could be living out of my car. But then last year at this time, I was quitting my job and planning trips to Tampa, Las Vegas and a cross country road trip. The difference in financial situations is vast. I don't have that freedom now. I couldn't do that now.

So there I was, with 3 DVDs, a nose/ear/wherever_else_you_want_to_trim clipper, and a whole gaggle of box sets. This might be a small recurring part when I am in hell. I would like to say that I just bought the clipper and put everything else back, but I can't.

I spent 80 more dollars then I had planned, and then I should have, but at least I have The Cure and Kill Bill to make me forget the money for a bit, and my nose hairs are nicely trimmed.

The sad part is, that I really should have gone for a bike ride today. So now I'll feel guilty about that.

LA was fun, but a little nippy. Its hard when you leave a cold place to arrive somewhere that should be warmer but is not. It is worse when you return home to find a 10 degree temperature change. 72˚F in California, 85˚F in Boston. The wind off the Pacific, the rain, not a good beach weekend, the wedding was fun though.

    Fucked up 15th
This day started well, on the wrong heading but well. At a bar, drinks and shots. Of course I should have been at home, having a 7am wakeup call at work. On the way home I was riding myself for staying out late. Come home to find roommate E, newly married. That in itself should have let me know that the day was going to be a little off.

I thought it was a joke, a fake ring, but, no, he's been married 9 days now. Then off to bed, asleep by 2, awake by 6. Not a good nights sleep, and a headache as my companion in the daylight.

Crawl into work, start sticking our heads into ceiling tiles up and down the auditorium. I was thinking about taxes, 1099-Misc and how much I was going to owe, and this trip to LA that is sucking cash out of my wallet like a singularity eats stars. Would the suit be ready? Would the trip be a bust? Still haven't rented a car. I mean, I am going to pack the tent just in case the room falls apart, but it seemed a good day to worry. Tax day and all.

My head in the ceiling, feeding wire, that catches every 2 feet on some nook and snag and tile. Sitting on a ledge with no way to get down and I watch, in almost slow motion as the ladder goes out from under Jonathan. As he make an effort to grab a support that isn't there. As he lands, after 10 feet, hard on his right side. I can't get down. I'm fucking stuck up here and wondering how the hell I'll get down and help. Mario walks in, almost nonchalantly, checks on Jonathan and then gets me the ladder, the ladder that failed, and I carefully get down.

School nurse, paramedics and then a ride in the ambulance to the hospital.

    Its only 9am.

His shoulder is dislocated. I can't get a hold of his wife. Neither can the school. A school founded by her family, a school that she sits on the board of and they can't get in contact with her.

I get through eventually, get a pass to let Jonathan know, find out that not all that much has happened. No meds, and his arm still hurts like mother fucking hell.

Compared to this morning doing my taxes was a breeze.

    Grab the nearest book....
Caterina.net has instructions, and they must be followed, so followed they shall:

Page 23, 5th sentence, of The Corrections, by Jonathan Franzen:
"Propped outside Chip's apartment was a clear-plastic umbrella that Chip recognized, with relief, as Julia Vrais's."
    The instructions:
    1. Grab the nearest book.
    2. Open the book to page 23.
    3. Find the fifth sentence.
    4. Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions.

The book was in my bag, at work.

Top 100 April Fool's Day Hoaxes
My favorites have always been #1, The Swiss Spaghetti Harvest, and #13, The Predictions of Isaac Bickerstaff.

The most evil hoax of all though is #2, Sidd Finch. I really had my hopes up about that man's fastball and the Met's chances in 1985. Of course the next year they won the Series, so I forgave Sports Illustrated.

    The full 100.

    April, 1st Launches

I'm always skeptical when someone launches a new web-ap on this day. Even when you have been hearing rumors about the ap for months.

Kinja and GMail "launched" today. Both are in Beta, so they may disappear again tomorrow.

Kinja has been in development for over a year. I am pretty sure that this is a real launch. I think.

Gmail is offering 1 GB of storage! Hotmail offers 2 MB and Yahoo offers 4 MB. So this might be a joke. Kind of like this Google Job Listing for a job on the moon.
