Conversations.
"They found water on Mars?", ad_man_1 said.
"This is the big announcement that Long John Silver's has been waiting for ... that there is evidence of a past salty sea on Mars," said Mike Baker, the Chief Marketing Officer.
"I wonder if they found any seafood?", ad_man_2 asked.
"Hmmm, that gives me an idea. Let's build a store on Mars," replied a board member.
"Good, but instead how about we give away free shrimp," said Long John, as he dipped a "Battered Dipped Jumbo Shrimp" (TM) into some horseradish.
"Hooray!" The shrimp cried out.
And so, lo and behold, Long John Silver's "Give America Some Free Shrimp Day" (TM) was born.
"We can't wait to celebrate NASA's out-of-this-world success, and there's no better way to recognize their giant accomplishments than with free Giant Shrimp for America," added Mike Baker, the CMO.

This a Boston band that is trying a unique experiment. To get Boston Bloggers to link to their site, to get people to listen to their music, to create a following, to create some buzz. Think meetup meets MTV, or something, I'm going to listen to it, and tell you what I think later.

Update: On first major pass through, think Nitzer Ebb meets God Lives Underwater.

Book store closings
Avenue Victor Hugo will be closing their doors next month, after 29 years of being on Newbury Street. This follows Spenser's Mystery Bookshop and Swedenborg Bookstore both closing late last year, and the Waterstone's that closed 9 years ago. There is now only one (non-rare) bookstore, that I know of, still on Newbury Street, Trident Booksellers & Cafe, which is really just a good place to eat.
I had stopped going to any of these stores, mainly Spenser's and Hugo, a long time ago. Mostly because I live closer to Harvard Square now, and don't go to Newbury Street as much as I did when I first started school. I loved Spenser's, it was a great store to find almost any out of print mystery book that you needed, and if they didn't have it, they would keep a look out for it and then call you when they got it. I went there for years, following them when they moved across and down the street, but had stopped visiting since around 2000. I loved Hugo for some time, whenever you entered you would get lost in the stacks, and would leave hours later with 2 or 3 books in your hands. They carried everything from Philosophy to Sci-Fi to History to Art, and the stock was constantly refreshed. Oddly when I worked at Barnes & Noble @ BU, I visited these stores more often then when I was no longer a bookseller.
I go so rarely down Newbury now days (even though I work very close to it now) that I only found out about Spenser's when I drove past it going to my eye doctor in December. I just found out about Hugo from Neil Gaiman's blog. It appears that Hugo had moved recently to a new shop, which could be why I thought it had closed years ago.
Newbury street is close to becoming just another strip mall, and this has been happening for some time. Chain clothes sellers are all over the place, and independent coffee and tea shops have been replaced by Starbucks, up and down the street. I only ever go there now to get new eyeglasses and shop for CDs at Newbury Comics.
I'll miss both stores, and will stop at Hugo before it closes, to relive some memories and maybe find some rare reads.

"For relaxing times, make it Suntory time."
A translation of the Suntory commercial scene in Lost in Translation.
When I saw the movie on DVD (cause I kept meaning to see it in the theater and then never did, which is usual for films I would like to see), I watched it with my friend John, who had spent over a year working in Tokyo. He understands and speaks Japanese and he was laughing a lot more during this scene then I was.
He didn't translate though, he just gave me the gist of what the director had said, which I had kind of figured out for myself.

Proper-Sheppard
In the early 90's I bought an album called "Scenes from the Second Storey" by a group called The God Machine. I loved it, and still do, another album that is on heavy rotation on the iPod. But as far as I could tell they fell off the face of the earth. Later, I heard that there was a second recording, but could never find it. In searches on the net I found out that the drummer had died, but that was all.
Now, by way of a my referral logs and this site, I have found that the lead singer of The God Machine had formed a new band in 96, and they have a new album out now.
The band is Sophia. Sounds vaguely of The God Machine, and I'll be looking for it the next time that I am record shopping. (There are audio snippets on the website)

Happy St Pats
I got home and no one had shoveled the driveway or sidewalk. So I went out to do it myself. 10 minutes later my next door neighbor came home, gave me a Bud Light and started on his walk and drive way.
"Happy Saint Patrick's Day", he said, and I, in a good Irish fashion, wish the same to you.

1 Photo-op a month
Time Magazine: Raising the Volume:
Administration sources tell TIME that employees at the Department of Homeland Security have been asked to keep their eyes open for opportunities to pose the President in settings that might highlight the Administration's efforts to make the nation safer. The goal, they are being told, is to provide Bush with one homeland-security photo-op a month.

Conversation
"I have the solution to all our problems. Kill them all. Kill everyone, just get out of this room out of this house and kill them all. This will solve all the problems. All of them. Christ, I can't wait to start."
"Kill everyone?"
"Yeah, kill them all, all of them, killed dead."
"With what? There are no weapons in this place. What are you going to use, huh?"
"Well. Umm, how about this spoon?"
"A spoon?"
"Yeah, bad idea, well what about that old Field Hockey stick in the living room, that will make a sweet sound when it starts crushing everyone's skulls. Kill them all dead."
"That's a woman's sport, field hockey."
"What, do you think I would look like a sissy killing with that?"
"Yeah man, I think ya would."
"Well I could get a gun, but then I would have to wait the federal mandated three days, and I want to start killing everyone now. Now Goddammit!"
"Well, let's think about this, man, lets be reasonable, we..."
"Kill everyone dead man, everyone..."
"Now wait a minute. Think. If you kill everyone who will paint those lines separating the lanes of the highways and down the middle of the street? Huh? Who? Who is going to cook you Pho? Or make you a good pasta salad? I mean you can't do those things."
"But I want to kill everyone man, I, I mean, kill."
"And what would happen to civilization if you kill everyone huh? Have you thought about that? No of course not. But don't come crawling to me when things start falling apart after you kill everyone, cause I won't help you. Nope."
"You won't?"
"No."
"Well, how about if we just kill anyone who works at KFC then. Can I do that? Or will civilization not be able to stay afloat without the Colonel's spices?"
"Man. KFC, man. Don't be dissing me, man, you know you can't live without kitchen strips."
"Yeah, I guess, you are ... wait, did you just say kitchen strips?"
"Yeah, kitchen strips."
"They are CHICKEN strips man, chicken."
"Sorry, I guess the advertising is getting to me."
"Yeah man, geeze. You and your commercials. Hey there's an idea. What if I just kill all the Eskimos?"
"Yeah. Cool, that won't fuck up civilization at all man. Great idea."
...
...
...
...
...
"Do I know any Eskimos?"
"No, I don't think you do."
"Damn."
"We could drive north. I'm sure that there are Eskimos somewhere in Canada."
"But, I just want to kill something now, not after a long car drive. And you know how sleepy I get after a long drive, I would probably sleep late, and miss all the Eskimos before they went to work and miss my chance to kill them all."
"Yeah. That would suck. They'd be at work and all that, and you wouldn't be able to get past the front desk without an appointment, and it would probably take a couple of days to get one, and then you'd have to go back to work, and you wouldn't be able to kill anyone. That would suck."
"I want to kill everyone, or at least something man."
"Well, what about that ant over there?"
"Oh, cool, an ant."

4:11 PM
Umm, next 20.
Yeah, I could actually post something, but I am "cleaning"* my room, and other things that I am not doing.
So the next 20 songs, which is a continuation of where we left off with the last 20 songs. Hooray:Nine Inch Nails "Gave Up (Live)"
St. Germain "Deep In It"
Louis Armstrong "Sweethearts on Parade"
John Coltrane "Acknowledgement"
Revolting Cocks "Physical (Let's Get)"
Coldplay "Green Eyes"
The Detroit Experiment "Enterlund"
Joy Division "Love Will Tear Us Apart"
New Order "State of the Nation"
Ronnie Earl "Hey Jose"
Tori Amos "Strange"
The Cure "Disintegration"
Pixies "Where is My Mind? (Live)"
Hardkandy "Moonlight (Remix)"
Pixies "Where is My Mind?"
Stone Temple Pilots "Big Empty"
Peter Gabriel "Mercy Street"
Dead Can Dance "Nierika"
The Beach Boys "Help Me, Rhonda"
Jane Sidberry "Calling All Angels"
XTC "Ball and Chain"
It is odd that we have Joy Division following New Order, and St. Germain following Armstrong following Coltrane, and the same Pixies song, one live and one studio, separated by some Electronic Lounge, and all of this on Random.
Well by the law of averages it has to happen every once in awhile. Now it would be amazing if I had 20 live tracks in a row, or 20 Jazz tracks, now that would be an interesting random mix.
Umm, no one is reading this are they? Umm, Ok.
NOW: Joy Division "As You Said"
* I am not actually cleaning my room, I am browsing the net by way of Blogdex or as my mom says "Mike, stop procastinating, and turn down that noise."

"Deaths all right with me, when it's on TV"
- From The Dead Milkmen "Death's All Right with Me"
The bassist of the Dead Milkmen, Dave Blood, took his own life this week. I'm sorry for his family's loss.
I started listening to the Milkmen in High School, mainly because "Punk Rock Girl" was in heavy rotation on WDRE. I at one time had a good chunk of their albums on tape, but now all I have are 4 CDs, Beelzebubba (1988), Metaphysical Graffiti (1990), Soul Rotation (1992) and a single of dance mixes of "Smokin' Banana Peels". Graffiti and 'bubba are on heavy rotation on my iPod, and have some of my favorite songs on them including "Life is Shit", "Stuart", "Punk Rock Girl", "Methodist Coloring Book", "I Tripped Over the Ottoman" and "If You Love Somebody, Set Them on Fire".
Hell any song playing from 'bubba or Graffiti and I am happy.
I hope Dave has found a happier place.

Another online poll
You have to love the American Family Association. They keep putting up online polls, and keep getting answers that they don't want to see.
They had a poll up about Gay marriage, and they said that they would send the results to Congress, but when the poll was done, it showed 60% favor gay marriage and so the AFA decided not to send it along.
Now they have a poll up about the Presidential election.
And as of now it is 89.95% for Kerry, 6.22% for Nader and 3.83% for Bush.

L.A. Wedding
My friend Lyndon is getting married on April 17th in Manhattan Beach, CA. I was in LA last summer on my cross-country trip, and happened to be there the day before he asked Arlene to marry him.
I just booked my tickets on Jetblue, and hopefully they will be as fun to fly as my last 3 times with them. Twice to Tampa, and the Las Vegas trip. I really like flying on Jetblue. I love the Direct TV, I love the service, and the seats are pretty comfy too.
Still need car and room, but I have places in mind.
I won't be leaving until 9 PM on the 18th, so if anyone has some good ideas for places to visit on a Sunday, drop me a note.
