10:09 AM
Seattle, WA
All I can tell you about Seattle right now is that the couches are comfortable and that the cable modem runs fast.
Maybe I should go outside. But it is a city out there. I haven't been in a city since Pittsburgh, and truth be told that really means that I haven't been in a city since I left Boston. I've been on a dude ranch, in the mountains, sleeping in tents and fearing that a grizzly would have tea with me before he ate the cake.
What if someone tries to speak with me? What then? How do I react? Do I hit him on the nose or try to stare him down?
I feel like I must leave this cozy house and explore the wild and rugged land that is Tacoma-Seattle.

10:50 PM
545 Miles
Seattle, Washington: I am staying at Sarah's house tonight, but Sarah just ran (and swam and rode) a half triatholon so she won't be back til tomorrow at 5. I am on the west coast, even though I haven't seen the Pacific yet, that will be tomorrow, I am just a couple of miles from going coast to coast.
I left Emily cutting the lawn at the ranch this morning and then proceeded to take all the bad dirt backroads to Garnet, Montana the best preserved Ghost Town in all of Montana. It was quite a town. I really liked the fact that I could walk almost anywhere in all of the buildings. The Hotel was the best preserved of all the buildings, 1 cabin is once again being used as a home and another can be rented out in the winter. Just imagine, alone in a Montana ghost town during a snow storm. Sounds eery.
Driving all those backroads took alot of time as I couldn't exceed 30mph and at most times was only able to do 5 to 10 mph. So I didn't get onto I-90 til 1:00pm MST, two and a half hours and only 40 miles driven.
I also want to thank Emily for putting up with me and Juanita for letting me stay at her ranch.

116 Miles in Yellowstone
I awoke and it was 31 degrees and my tent and bag were drenched from condensation and the damp air. Not one of my best mornings on this trip. But the day warmed up and the clouds went away, even if they returned and dropped rain now and again.
Started in the Grand Canyon again today, then onward to Old Faithful which I saw twice, in the interval I walked around the valley and watched the Castle Geyser (usually erupts twice a day 90 feet high for 20 minutes) which was giving off little bursts every 3 minutes. Very fun. Almost rained on us a couple of times.

81 Miles in Yellowstone
It was 33 degress this morning. Doesn't feel like summer at all.
Today I spent a good portion of the day at the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. Then on to Tower and Mammoth Springs and then to Norris where I waited an hour for a geyser tio erupt (it never did) then to Canyon Junction for my new campsite.
Saw a black bear in the distance today and got stuck in a Bison traffic Jam. It is 39 degrees right now.

Yeloowstone N.P., Norris Campground: It was snowing today. Snow in June. Supposedly they got 3 inches of the stuff yesterday. Yellowstone is beautiful. I can't wait to start exploring tomorrow.
I stopped at Cody, Wyoming today, Buffalo Bill's home town. Ate at the Irma which was built in 1902, the hotel cost $80,000 to build, the bar cost $100,000 just by itself. had a very good lunch. Recommend it if you are ever in Cody.
Got to Yellowstone's east entrance around 2. The temperature started dropping and then snow started to fall. It is 39 degrees right now.

Bighorn, National Park: Staying at a campground here tonight, and will sleep in the car as it is wet and too late to set up my tent. (Just $10 for the campsite) Went to Crazy Horse Memorial today, intersesting, still a work in proress but it will be (and is) one amazing piece of americana when it is finished. Then stopped in Deadwood, S.D. and saw Wild Bill and Calamity Jane's grave sites. Deadwood has too many casinos, but I am finding that all over the west.
Then stopped at Devil's Tower. Took many many pictures and walked arounf the base of the tower. In June there is a voluntary dfreeze on climbing so as to respect our Native American brethren. But there were still 3 people out for a climb.
I will be in Yellowstone tomorrow.
10:09 AM
KOA/ Mount Rushmore
Had to get an AOL account to be able to log on. Hopefully will be able to kill it before it starts charging me.
Today I am going to see Crazy Horse and do the scenic loop and then head off towards Yellowstone.
Gotta fly or else I would post more.

Black Hills, South Dakota: Am staying at a KOA in the park. Saw Mount Rushmore. After I set up my tent it started to hail and then the temp dropped to the 50's. I went for a quick ride and got reall messy and then took my first shower in 3 days.
More later.

Badlands, South Dakota: Did 19.88 miles on the bike along the loop and some dirt roads. Did I say that this place is beautifull? It really is. Then drove along the loop road, as this park is pretty big and really accessible by car. Stopped at the overlooks and stop points and took pictures and walked. Saw the prairie dog town and some Bison in the western section of the park, which is only accessible by dirt roads.
I love this place and will definitley have to come back again. It really deserves a week or two to be really appreciated.

215 Miles
Badlands, South Dakota: This place is amazing. I was only going to stop and do the loop, but I plan on staying a few days now.
Started out in Mitchell and visited the Corn Palace. Very,, very weird. A building decorated in corn. Stooped at a rest stop along the Missouri that overlooks the Plum Camp that Lewis and Clark stayed at for one night. Then I stopped at the 1880 Town, needs work, and no real reason to stop here if you are in South Dakota. Also it appears that I keep going to Kevin Costner movie sites. This place was used and house memorabillia from Dances with Wolves.
Staying in a camp site in the Badlands. Really, really beautiful park.
1:14 AM
South Dakota
The email server for blogger is giving me a headache. My last 5 posts are gone, goodbye, kaput. (Good thing I wrote stuff down in my journal)
It is midnight here, the home of the Corn Palace, and I drove 500+ miles and am tired. The hotels system doesn't recognize OS X and so my iBook is a large paperweight:)
I will try and get on this computer again in the morning and post some stuff.
Night.

10:55 PM
528 Miles
Mitchell, South Dakota: I had to get out of Iowa today, so I drove and drove and said that I would not stop in Iowa at all except for gas. Then I stopped at Mason City, Iowa, which has a very large example of Prairie School Architecture. The museum in town had a nice display of the town and a walking tour of the houses. (all of which are private residences except the Stockman House, which of course was only open to the public on Thursdays to Sundays.
I then got out of Iowa and was in Minnesota, and then it started to rain. Not normal rain, flash flood type rain. The seals of my drivers side door started to leak and I had to pull over and stop under an intersection, along with 3 other cars and a few motorcycles, in order to hide from the rain.
I am in an AmericInn.

Manchester, Iowa: Oh what a day. It started out well, I went for a bike ride to The Field of Dreams (9.08 miles) and walked around the park for a while and looked at the corn, which was only 6 inches high, so maybe they can dress up mice in baseball uniforms and have them walk out onto the field. I then went to the St. Francis Xavier Basilica and walked around the church.
Then I left for parts west along US RT 20. Stopped to do my laundry and wash the car and then stopped to get gas. It was at this point that I noticed that I was missing my second wallet. (With my ID and credit card in it) Drove back to the laundry place and they didn't have it, then called the motel I stayed at, they didn't have it. So I drove all the way back to Dyersville and looked for it.
Found it in my car.
Camping in a state park, 23 miles west of Dyersville.

Dyersville, Iowa: First stop was near Elizabeth, Illinois and a look out tower that gives and excellant view of the surrounding country. I then drove to Galena, Illinois where I spent most of the day. They were giving a tour of some of the historical houses in the city. Beautiful city. I want to visit this place again and spend even more time. Visited President U.S. Grant's home also. I then drove to the Fenelon Place Elevator, and met Bruce.
Bruce is a bowler. He also runs the elevator. I have a whole story about Bruce that I might post when I return.
Staying at a Super 8.

310 Miles
Freeport, Illinois: I woke in the park and did 9.31 miles on the bike, the park is very nice, and the showers were spotless. I didn't leave the park until almost noon.
First stop was at Shipshewana, Indiana at the Wanna Cup Restaraunt, staffed by locals (which include Amish) it is a small home-cooked fast food restaraunt. If you are ever near I highly recommend. Then I stopped at Menno-Hof, a Mennonite-Amish Visitor's center. A museum about the history of the Mennonites and the Amish. Interesting. Then I drove north and drove through Michigan but didn't stop at all. I took US RT 12 and once back in Indiana stopped at Indiana Dunes and climbed Mt. Baldy, a very high and steep sand dune. I drove straight through Chicago and kept going till I had to stop. Staying at an AmericInn.

Angola, Indiana: Left Pitt late (slept in and then helped Missy's grandparents move chairs and table into house for Jake's Mothers surprise party on Saturday).
It is Friday the thirteenth and I was a little afraid that I would crash, once I hit Ohio I was the furthest west I had ever driven, and this will be the case until I hit the Pacific.
In Ohio I stopped at Vermilion and saw Lake Erie, the lake was a little dirty. Next I stopped at Marblehead, which was off route but has a lighthouse, and I have to drive out of my way for a lighthouse. It was late so I drove to Pokagon State Park in Angola, Indiana and camped. My neighbor's were a little noisy but I got a good nights sleep.

Today I visited Weller at PNC Park. We went to his house and then to the Yacht Club, his favorite bar, on Mt. Washington to eat and then a tour of the park. The park is very nice, too bad the Pirates suck, maybe I'll hit a game on the way back.
Jake and I went out to dinner and then to Fat Heads for some beer.

Less than 10 hours to go and I now have a sore throat. I hope I am not getting sick.
Just 3 things left on the to-do list.
10:09 AM

I have a load of stuff that I have to finish today. Packing, the car rack, the bank, burn some more CDs, double check, and then maybe sleep.
I will of course forget something, hopefully it won't be that important.

Failed Day
The parody becomes something more.
You can now meet out at Wildwood Park to participate and play some music or just chill. I might go, as a lark. 1 pm Sunday the 8th, directions and whatnot at Failed Day Festival 2003.

Arrrggghhh
Field Day Cancelled, Giants Field Day instead. Less bands, shitty stadium, one day instead of 2.
The only enjoyment I will get from this, as I am not going to Giants Stadium (I once said I would never see a show there again DM 1990) is the message boards which are quite funny in the peoples anguish, spite and anger.
Failed Day (Parody Site)
At least I got a full refund. And that is all I got.

10:56 PM
WTF?
Field Day, the 2 day concert festival that I have been waiting for since I heard about it in February has to be the most ill-planned festival ever. I mean the original Woodstock was fucked up but at least they had the permits to play.
The rumor now is that the show will be held at Giants Stadium. If true I have no idea where the camp site could possibly be. The promoter had already started building the soundstage out at Calverton already. People have booked hotel rooms and deluxe bus packages. I would love to be at Calverton on Saturday when people start showing up because they had no idea that the show has been moved or cancelled.
What a fucking fiasco this weekend is going to be. I hope that the bands I want to see will still be playing if this thing goes on. Radiohead, Beck, Interpol, Beastie Boys, Spiritulized and Thievery Corporation. That is the only way this weekend will still be a success.
---
In other news I have been procrastinating everything lately. My cross country trip starts in a week and I still am going around half assed. I should have finished all the little shit by now, yet I still haven't done the laundry. Oh well, the trip isn't about being on a schedule anyway, the only deadline I have is when I have to be in New York, July 21st. Then back up in Boston around August 1st.
States that I will be travelling through, in order:
Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Finally Massachusetts again.
24 States, half of the lower 48. I repeat 5 states, and 16 will be states I have never visited. I will be uploading quick and small updates to the site from my cell phone while on the road, with larger updates when I have computer access.
More as it happens.
